dc.description.abstract Newtonian equations of motion for a Bloch electron essentially equivalent to Zak's equation are derived in an elementary manner, assuming arbitrary electromagnetic fields, starting with Bloch's theorem and using the Hamiltonian formulation. For very high magnetic fields the velocity must be defined differently form the standard low-field formula. en_US
